euronews has spoken to Abu Yazim al Humsi, a correspondent for the opposition Sham Network in Damascus, who described the latest situation on the ground in Syria. He fled the capital’s Midan neighbourhood on Friday morning and is now in hiding nearby.
“There have been heavy clashes in the Mazza district. Not just there, but in almost every area of Damascus,” he said.
“Syrian army helicopters have bombarded the Hajar al Aswad district and the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp. There are military reinforcements on the streets, ready to attack more districts.
“The reinforcements are most likely the Fourth Brigade, under the command of Bashar al-Assad’s brother, Maher. They’re getting tanks ready for a possible attack on Hajar al Aswad.
“As for the Midan district, I was there Friday morning and I can say that the retreat of the Free Syrian Army was a tactical withdrawal so as to deploy in other districts of Damascus.
“Some of the fighters then headed to the Mazza district and that’s when Assad’s army began bombarding there and there are now violent clashes in that district.”
