Several new television series have made it to the list of nominees for this year’s Emmy Awards, joining a list of past favorites.

Earning nominations in 17 categories, ‘American Horror Story’ equalled last year’s best television drama winner, ‘Mad Men.’ New British show ‘Downtown Abbey’ also brought in 16 nominations.

“If you look at the acting categories, both comedy and drama, half of the nominees in the acting categories are first time nominees, so it really is a changing of the guard and that’s very exciting for our business,” said Bruce Rosenblum, chairman of Emmy’s organizer, the Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The Emmys are the top TV awards in the US given out by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. This year’s awards will be held on September 23 and be broadcast on the ABC television network.

Television host Jimmy Kimmel and actress Kerry Washington announced the nominees for the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in Los Angeles, California.
