French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius met his Algerian counterpart Mourad Medelci in Algiers on Sunday for his first official trip to an Arab country.
Talks between the two ministers were expected to focus on the crisis in Mali. Its understood both men agreed to look for a political solution.
Algeria says four of its diplomats are still being held in Mali. Three had been freed after being abducted by Islamist rebels in April.
