South African Home Affairs Minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has become the first female to head the African Union Commission.

The 63-year-old’s election brought to an end a protracted leadership battle that analysts feared had threatened to divide and weaken the organisation.

Zuma – the ex-wife of South African President Jacob Zuma beat incumbent Jean Ping of Gabon.
