A woman has been spotted with a man.
So why is this a big deal?
Because it’s a woman. Because it’s North Korea. Because it’s Kim Jong-un.
Speculation abounds about this “mystery woman”, who’s been seen with North Korea’s young leader in recent weeks. But this woman’s identity still remains undetermined.
According to Korea JoongAng Daily, she’s said to be Hyon Song-wol, a former pop star and vocalist of the Bochonbo Electronic Music Band and Kim Jong-un’s long time flame. The two are said to have fallen in love in their teens but had to go 10 years without seeing each other owing to the disapproval from Kim Jong-un’s recently deceased father, Kim Jong-il.
The singer is believed to have married an officer from the North Korean army in 2006, with whom she’s said to have had at least one child.
But South Korean media reports have also suggested that she’s Kim’s younger sister, Yo-Jong, who studied with him in Switzerland in the 1990s.
This “mysterious woman” has accompanied Kim at a series of official events, including on state television, when they paid tribute to the leader’s grandfather on the anniversary of his death.
This being North Korea and perhaps the most reclusive state on earth, it’s difficult to say with any certainty who this woman really is. But if she actually is Kim’s love interest, their rekindled relationship may even serve to soften his image both at home and abroad.
