Two men have been shot dead during a protest sparked by the arrest of a prominent Shi’ite Muslim cleric in eastern Saudi Arabia.

Demonstrators marched through the streets of Qatif which is a predominantly Shi’ite city in the largely Sunni-run country.

Amateur footage showed the victims being carried away by fellow protesters.

The arrested cleric who is known for promoting Shi’ite interests, had also earlier been wounded when he was arrested for sedition.

With neighbouring Bahrain in turmoil since its Sunni rulers tried to put down a popular uprising, the Saudi authorities have called for calm.
