Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has blamed the US for the continuing violence in his country. Speaking to German television, Assad gave his view of the uprising against him and his crackdown on dissent.

“A president shouldn’t run away from challenge, and we have a national challenge now, in Syria. A president shouldn’t escape this situation,” he said.

When asked what was the role of the United States in the conflict, Assad replied: “It’s part of the conflict. They offered an umbrella and political support to those gangs, to create instability, to destabilise Syria.”
