Italy’s cabinet have approved 4.5 billion euros in spending cuts aimed at slashing the country’s bloated public sector and delaying a sales tax rise until July next year.

It is part of Prime Minister Mario Monti’s strategy to shore up Italian finances in line with European Union requests.
