Gunman 'kills hostages' in German eviction drama

Five people are reported killed after a gunman took a number of people hostage in Germany.

Police say they believe the hostage-taker is also dead.

The drama happened in the western city of Karlsruhe as a man faced eviction, it is said after failing to pay his rent for several months.

Special police forces were sent in after the man barricaded himself into the flat, holding hostage several others.

The surrounding area was sealed off and a school and a kindergarten evacuated.

A number of people are said to have gone to the property earlier: its new owner, a bailiff, a locksmith and a caretaker.

Reports say police were unable to make contact with the gunman. According to a German TV channel he was a hunter and had several weapons, including a hand grenade, although this has not been confirmed.
