Sergio Ramos pulled off a delightful Panenka spot kick that gave Spain the upperhand in their 4-2 penalty shoot-out win over Portugal in the semi-finals was planned.
The 26-year-old centre back almost hit the car park in a penalty miss in Real Madrid’s Champions League semi-final shoot-out defeat by Bayern Munich in April.
But there were no such mistakes this time around as he coolly chipped Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio.
Ramos’ penalty in the last-four tie in Donetsk was similar to Andrea Pirlo’s audacious spot-kick in Italy’s shoot-out win over England in the quarters.
‘Panenka’ penalties are named after Antonin Panenka, whose nonchalant chipped penalty in the Euro76 final gave the Czech Republic victory over defending champions West Germany.
