Tymoshenko trial postponed

The high-profile tax evasion trial of former Ukrainian Prime Minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, has been postponed until mid-July, a move which should spare Kiev further negative publicity during Euro 2012 football tournament.

At the request of state prosecutors the case is adjourned until July 10, and a medical examination of Tymoshenko has been ordered to assess whether she is fit to attend the trial.

Tymoshenko is already serving a seven year prison sentence for abuse of office, and says that all charges against her are politically motivated. Western outrage at the treatment of the former Prime Minister has caused some European politicians to boycott matches at the tournament, which Ukraine is hosting with Poland.
