One of the international stars at the Gnaoua Music Festival was Oumou Sangaré from Mali.

She began singing aged five, at first to help her mother feed the family, then later on professionally and says she grew up with music in her blood.

Aged 21, the singer from the Wassoulou region, south of the Niger River shot to international fame.
