First US president’s copy of Constitution in record sale

George Washington’s copy of the US Constitution and Bill of Rights has been sold at auction in New York for nearly 10 million dollars, including commission.

The book, annotated by America’s first president, has been bought by the non-profit organisation that runs his Mount Vernon estate in Virginia.

The price of 9.8 million dollars including commission – the equivalent of 7.8 million euros – is three times that of original estimates.

At 223 years old, it is said to be in almost perfect condition.
