A Syrian MIG 21 fighter pilot has landed his plane in Jordan where he is seeking political asylum.

It is reported a Syrian Air Force colonel made an emergency landing in the Russian-built aircraft at King Hussein Air Base in Mafraq, close to Jordan’s northern border with Syria.

Syrian state television said communication with the jet being flown by Colonel Hassan Merhi al-Hamade was lost at 10:34 am on Thursday, but did not confirm a defection.

Jordanian officials said over 120,000 Syrians have crossed into their country, since the start of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad 15 months ago.
