Lady Luck was definitely not with Ukraine in Donetsk as the side went down one-nil to England.
With the hopes of the co-host nation resting on a win or nothing to stay in the Euro 2012 championships it was particularly bitter not to score when everyone except the linesman believed they had.
Still, Ukraine football fans put on a brave face.
“Ukraine are champions! We are proud of our country, and we are proud of our national team,” said one Ukrainian supporter kissing his team shirt.
On the other hand England supporters were euphoric: “ We are very happy, we’ve had a wonderful time in Ukraine and England have won, 1:0. Why wouldn’t we be happy? Fantastic! The next match, bring them on! They (Italy) may play their fancy football but England are going to grind them down and win 1:0.”
So it is a place in the quarter finals against Italy. England supporters may have begun the competition with the lowest of expectations but now hopes are raised.
Euronews reporter Sergio Cantone said:
“Defeat and victory are the same… mark them with a nice cold beer. And who knows how much of it will flow tonight and also on the following nights of Euro 2012.”
