Sarkozy’s UMP take an electoral hiding

The UMP Party of former President Nicolas Sarkozy have suffered at the hands of the Socialists.

The defeat in the presidential election was marginal; the defeat in the parliamentary vote comprehensive:

After the result was announced, UMP leader Jean-François Copé said:

“Faced with the left which now holds all the power, we won’t be complacent. We won’t let national independence or the values of the public be undermined. We won’t let the country be ruined with increases in taxes and debt. We won’t let our companies or our universities be destroyed through lack of competitiveness. And we will not tolerate – I must insist- any weakening of the Franco-German relationship, or European construction.”

The UMP are now set for five long years in opposition.
