World and European champions Spain reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 as winners of Group C and sent Croatia crashing out after beating them 1-0 in Gdansk on Monday.
Vicente del Bosque’s men, bidding to win an unprecedented third major tournament in a row, were unable to create clear-cut chances and needed a late tap in from Sevilla’s Jesus Navas to secure all three points.
In the other game, Italy also progressed after outclassing the Republic of Ireland 2-0 in Poznan.
La Squadra Azzurra opened the scoring after 35 minutes thanks to a superb header from AC Milan forward Antonio Cassano.
Manchester City’s Mario Balotelli made sure of the win in injury time with an outstanding overhead kick from Alessandro Diamanti’s corner.
