Mario Gomez struck a twice to help pre-tournament favourites Germany beat the Netherlands 2-1 in their second Group B match at the Metalist Stadium in Kharkiv on Wednesday.

Gomez’s first half brace stretched his tally so far to three goals – a possible golden boot winner there.

Robin Van Persie pulled one back on 73 minutes but it wasn’t enough as the Dutch now sit on the verge of elimination while the Germans are on the brink of qualifying for the quarter-finals.
