Brazilian athletes dominated on home soil at the Judo Grand Slam in Rio. Firstly the women’s under 52 kg category saw Eleudis Valemtim take gold against her compatriot Milena Mendez. In the first minute of the final Valemtim was penalised, giving points to her opponent for avoiding her grip.

The tables were turned later when Mendez was herself penalised giving Valemtim the points advantage towards the end of the match. A last strong attack from Mendez was not enough to reverse the score and Valemtim celebrated victory.

In the men’s under 73 kg category, Brazilian athletes Mercelo Contini and Adriano Santos went head-to-head. With half the fight gone the men were equal on points and there seemed to be nothing in it. That was until Santos was penalised handing Contini the points he needed for his first victory at a major IJF world tour event.
