Students and their families have been rallying in Montreal in Canada, 48 hours after talks with authorities over tuition fee hikes collapsed.
The dispute has been going on for months now and has lead to violent clashes between students and police.
CLASSE student union spokesman, Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois told journalists: “The objective was to send a message to Mr Charest at this moment. It’s not only a student strike; it’s also a popular struggle. We see a lot of people going in the streets every night in Montreal and now all over Quebec.”
Premier Jean Charest is struggling to contain the protests. His liberal government passed a law last month increasing penalties for illegal demonstrations to try to prevent them getting out of hand.
