Isolated clashes were reported between protesters and police outside the court in Cairo where former President Hosni Mubarak was given a life sentence.
Angry demonstrators are said to have thrown rocks at riot officers standing guard.
Many Egyptians had expected lighter sentences and the police were braced for large-scale unrest. However, life imprisonment for Mubarak appeased some of his critics.
Fireworks were let off and there were cries of “God is greatest.”
Families of some of those killed during the uprising said they welcomed the punishments handed down, but doubted whether it would stop further abuses of power in the future.
