Former Liberian president Charles Taylor has been given a sentence of 50 years by judges at the Special Court for Sierra Leone at the Hague.

Taylor is the first head of state to be convicted by an international tribunal since World War II and is likely to be housed in a UK jail.

The 64-year-old was found guilty of 11 counts of aiding and abetting the war crimes of rebels in neighbouring Sierra Leone.
