Russia’s Murat Khabachirov produced a superb display to outclass Uzbekistan’s Yakhyo Imamov and claim the under 81 kilo class at the Judo Grand Slam in Moscow on Sunday.
The Russian was made to battle hard throughout the contest and scored a waza-ari with a beautiful o-soto-gari before Imamov leveled the scores in the dying seconds.
With the bout all square at the end, all three judges finally gave the win to Khabachirov to the delight of the home fans.
And in the women’s event, Brazil’s Maria Portela stunned Mongolia’s Tsend Ayush to clinch the under 70 kilo category.
The 24 year old, who edged out Canada’s Kelita Zupancic in the semis quickly got her nose in front with a Yuko and then defended well to secure the title.
