We continue our series of Euro2012 competing nations with Russia.
Dick Advocaat’s men were drawn in Group A for the upcoming European Championships alongside Czech Republic, 2004 winners Greece and co-hosts Poland.
It is a group Russia should have little difficulty with as they look to build on their stunning semi-final run in Austria and Switzerland four years ago.
Advocaat said: ‘‘We are going to the tournament to try to win that. That’s for sure. Everybody realises that as well. So that’s our target, and again, at the end, we can say it wasn’t realistic or not. But again, if you go to a tournament like this, you want to win that.”
Most of the impressive Euro 2008 squad will play a key role this time also although the average age of around 28 is a concern for some back home.
If the rejuvenated Andrei Arshavin lights up the tournament the same way he did last time out there shouldn’t be too much to worry about in the early stages.
Russia’s first euro 2012 Group A fixture however is against the Czech republic on June 8th at the Municipal Stadium in Wrocław.
