Protesters attack Mali’s caretaker president

world news

Mali’s caretaker president needed hospital treatment after being beaten by protesters when they stormed his palace calling for him to resign.

Thousands of Malians are angry because Dioncounda Traore’s mandate as head of a transitional government has been extended under a foreign-backed deal.

Traore was put in place after the military leaders of a March coup agreed to a transitional government. But many Malians remain frustrated with the country’s political classes.

Monday’s protest also reflected defiance against neighbouring west African states which have backed Traore as a pre-requisite for foreign aid.
