The disputed sovereignty of Gibraltar has once again come between the royal families of Spain and Britain.
Queen Sofia has cancelled a visit marking the Diamond Jubilee of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth, after her husband King Juan Carlos earlier declined an invitation to Windsor Castle.
It is not the first time Gibraltar, a British-ruled outcrop off the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, has caused a royal rift.
Back in the 1980s an invitation to attend Prince Charles’ wedding was refused as he was to visit there on his honeymoon.
Now news that the regimental band of Gibraltar will be performing at the Jubilee celebrations has once again caused Spanish royal annoyance.
