A founding member of the islamist group Hamas has been speaking to euronews about Europe’s stance on its control of Gaza.
The EU, Israel and the US do not recognise its authority, describing Hamas as a terrorist organisation.
In 2006, the group swept to victory in Palestinian parliamentary elections.
“We must govern in Gaza and in the West Bank and Jerusalem, because that is the result of the elections,” Mahmoud al-Zahar, co-founder of Hamas and a member of its leadership in Gaza, told euronews.
“The West is being hypocritical and against the Muslim world and islamic influences. In particular, it doesn’t want to accept the results of free and fair elections,” he continued.
In the full interview, to be broadcast on euronews from Tuesday night, al-Zahar also comments on the ongoing unrest in Syria and action against Iran over its nuclear ambitions.
