The body of Libya’s former Oil Minister Shukri Ghanem has been found in the River Danube in Austria. The authorities say there were no signs of violence.

Sixty-nine year old Ghanem had been chairman of Libya’s state-owned National oil Corporation before defecting last year during the uprising.

He was also a former prime minister.

After making a final break with the Gaddafi administration, Ghanem first appeared in Rome claiming to have left Libya because of the violence being used by government forces on rebels.

He was believed to have been living in Europe in exile since then but was still closely associated with Gaddafi’s rule by Libya’s new leaders and had not returned home.
