For the first time combined elements of the Russian and Chinese navies are holding joint exercises in the Yellow Sea.
The wargames include anti-submarine warfare and the simulation of hostage rescue from ships.
Russia has sent four warships including three missile crusiers, and the Chinese have deployed 16 vessels including a pair of submarines, and 4000 men for the week-long wargame.
“An anti-submarine drill is one of the most top-secret aspects for any country’s armed forces. China and Russia conducting such a drill means a good exchange between the two countries,” says Chinese military expert Yin Zhuo.
Both sides are insisting on their desire to promote peace and stability, but in a region disputed by six neighbours America is also stiffening its military presence.
