Rebel fighter elected East Timor president

East Timor chose a new president on Monday: ex-independence fighter-turned-politician Taur Matan Ruak won 61 percent of the vote in the presidential election against fellow former rebel Francisco Guterres Lu Olo.

The former Portuguese colony was invaded by Indonesia in 1975, gaining its independence from Jakarta 10 years ago.
