French President Nicolas Sarkozy has formally recognised the State’s responsibility for abandoning Algerians who fought on the French side during Algeria’s war of independence.
Tens of thousands of Harkis, as they are known, were massacred by locals after France withdrew its troops from the north African country in 1962.
