UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday said the onus is on the Syrian government to keep its promise to observe a ceasefire.
Speaking in the Swiss city of Geneva, Ban said the situation in Syria looked calmer and that he was working with the UN Security Council to send an observer team as quickly as possible
“Once again I call on the government of Syria to fully implement its commitment under the six point plan. I also call on the Syrian opposition to sustain this cessation of violence in all its forms,” Ban said.
“This is the time for a fundamental change of course. Too many lives have been lost. It is time to stop the killing. I appeal to all friends of Syria to exercise maximum influence in halting this tragic conflict.”
Ban was also set to meet with the UN’s special envoy on Syria, Kofi Annan, the diplomat who drew up the six-point peace plan.
