Former US senator Rick Santorum has dropped out of the race to be the Republican Party’s presidential candidate in November’s election.
It leaves Mitt Romney as the overwhelming favourite to take on Barack Obama later this year.
A devout Catholic with seven children, Santorum appealed to social conservatives and some blue collar republics.
But he was lagging well behind Romney in the opinion polls ahead of his announcement.
