Hundreds of mourners have attended the funeral in Beirut of a Lebanese TV cameraman shot dead by Syrian soldiers.
Ali Shaaban was killed yesterday as he worked near the border between the two countries. His employer, the Al-Jadeed channel, said he was on the Lebanese side of the frontier in the northern region of Wadi Khaled.
According to a colleague, the crew had explained to the soldiers what they were doing but their car was fired on anyway.
Lebanon’s prime minister, whose government is dominated by Syria’s ally Hezbollah, says he deplores the killing, especially as the team was inside Lebanese territory. He wants Damascus to investigate.
Syrian state television reported that the shooting happened as Syrian guards at a nearby border post came under fire from what it called a “terrorist group”.
