Public transport workers in Brussels have held a silent march in memory of their late colleague, who was beaten to death on Saturday.

The city’s bus, tram and metro lines will be shut until tomorrow morning as part of a three-day walkout in protest at the killing.

Fifty-six-year-old Iliaz Tahiraj had worked as an inspector for 29 years. He was attacked after being asked to intervene in a minor road accident involving a public bus.

Transport company STIB said it was the first time that one of its employees had been killed on the job.
