Rescue from rising river after Turkey bridge collapse

In deep mud on the banks of a river in northern Turkey a rescue team hauled a man to safety. He had been caught in the torrents of the Filyos river, its levels rising dangerously as snow in the mountains melted.

An ambulance waited beyond the banks as a first aid team applied cardiac massage. It seemed as if it was a battle for survival. One rescuer confirmed how close it had been.

“He recovered. He is alive,” he said and breathless himself added, “When we got here, the man was not breathing. Now he is ok.”

Its believed up to 11 people are still missing after a bridge collapsed. Two vehicles careered into the torrent below, one a minibus with up to 15 people. The search for the missing is continuing.
