Mali rebels declare independence

In Mali, Tuareg rebels have declared independence in a northern area of the West African country.

The separatists from the Azawad National Liberation Movement said in a statement on their website that they have captured enough territory to form their own state.

Two weeks ago the military in Mali seized power in a coup against the regime of president Amadou Toumani Touré. Since then rebel groups, including Islamists, have taken advantage of the situation to further their own aims.
