President Bingu wa Mutharika of Malawi has died. The 78-year-old suffered a heart attack on Thursday. Government sources have confirmed he failed to recover and passed away on Friday morning.
The country’s constitution makes it clear that Vice-President Joyce Banda is first in line to take over as head of state of the impoverished southern African nation. She was expelled from the ruling party two years ago so his succession could be fraught with problems.
Mutharika had been under pressure amid claims of nepotism and mismanaging the economy in his final months.
