Italian nationalist leader Umberto Bossi quits

The leader of Italy’s nationalist party, Umberto Bossi, has resigned amid allegations that he spent party money on doing up his house and holidays for his children.

Prosecutors are currently probing the party’s treasurer, Francesco Belsito, and two other officials over accusations of fraud.

The 70-year-old Bossi is not under investigation and has denied ever using Northern League cash for his or his family’s benefit.

The resignation of the firebrand leader of the populist, anti-immigration, opposition party is likely to destabilise it and weaken one of the main political forces opposing Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti’s austerity programme in parliament.
