A week long strike by refuse collectors has left the Sicilian capital of Palermo struggling under a growing mountain of rubbish. Workers took industrial action after their private sector employers filed for bankruptcy. With the littered streets becoming a threat to public health the city council has freed up funds to pay wages in the short term.
