United Nations and Arab League special envoy, Kofi Annan has declared the Syrian crisis cannot carry on indefinitely and that President Assad cannot resist the calls for change.
Annan was speaking at Moscow airport before departing for Beijing on the second leg of a trip designed to shore up support for his peace mission.
“And as part of the discussions we are having with the Syrian authorities,” said Annan, “it is not excluded that a UN observer force may go in to ensure that the parties honour and respect the commitments that they are going to make.”
The year-long uprising against Assad is the focus for a summit in Iraq on Thursday. Arab leaders are not expected to call on him to step down but they are likely to support a Syrian-led transfer of power.
