Wade admits defeat in Senegal presidential poll

There were celebrations in Senegal as supporters of presidential challenger Macky Sall greeted his victory.

Although official results have not yet been declared, President Abdoulaye Wade phoned his rival and conceded defeat after a majority of results pointed to a Macky Sall win.

The outcome ends Wade’s controversial bid for a third term.

Sall’s election is the latest test for democracy in a region plagued by bloodshed and flawed polls. Senegal is the only nation in mainland West Africa not to have experienced a coup since independence.

However, Wade’s attempt to hold onto power despite constitutional law limiting a president to two terms, sparked deadly clashes across the country.
