A group of Canary Islanders travelled to Spain’s capital on Saturday to denounce plans to drill for oil off their archipelago.
They smeared themselves in black paint before joining a protest outside the Environment Ministry in Madrid. Similar protests were due to be held on Tenerife and several other islands.
The group says Spanish oil company Repsol’s plans threatens the island’s tourism and rare marine life.
