At Tokyo Fashion Week the traditional kimono gets a touch of the modern with the designs of Jotaro Saito.
See how he mixes the two influences in our report.
Saito explained why he chose to bring one the country’s enduring symbols to a contemporary audience: “Japan is very traditional, but the world also looks to us for subculture, like animation or computer games. A culture where the new and the classical co-exist, well, I think that’s fascinating. How can I describe it? You could call it a new ‘Japonisme’. So it’s not a minimal or simple thing; what I want to try and reflect is the feel of this new ‘Japonisme,’ but in kimono form.”
