France in mourning after Jewish school shooting

France is trying to come to terms with the gunning down of three children and a rabbi at a Jewish school in Toulouse yesterday – and the idea that what has been described as a “serial sniper” is on the loose.

It is thought the person who opened fire on the schoolchildren was also behind the shooting of three soldiers in two separate incidents last week.

It has been reported the gunman was wearing a camera which may have been used to record the bloodshed.

When questioned on this point, France’s Interior Minister Claude Guéant, confirmed a witness had described seeing video recording equipment, adjusted using straps, around the shooter’s neck.

Officers in Toulouse, where the latest killings occured, are on the highest level of terrorism alert and security has been stepped up around all major religious sites.

More than 200 police have been drafted in to track the killer. They have not named a suspect but say they are looking for a man believed to be a trained marksman.

In all three incidents, the gunman arrived on a stolen scooter and used a Colt .45. In the school shooting, he fled on a Yamaha motorbike.
