The Toulouse killings come as France’s presidential election gets underway. All the candidates have condemned the attack and expressed their support for the Jewish community. President Nicolas Sarkozy visited the school to convey his solidarity in person.
Sarkozy said: “This murder doesn’t just hurt the Jewish community, the entire national community is distressed and is by your side. Tomorrow, in all French schools, there will be a minute of silence in memory of the children of this school.”
His main rival, Socialist Francois Hollande, voiced similar sentiments when he visited the school:
“Four deaths, three children, one seriously injured person; it’s senseless and I should be here to express my solidarity with the city of Toulouse and to say that it’s not just a school, some Jewish people, or a city that is affected, but all of France,” he said.
