The Cuban authorities have detained dozens of dissidents over the weekend including around 70 members of the Ladies in White group.
The women were picked up by police after they strayed from their permitted protest route.
Although it is not clear where they are being held human rights spokesman Elizardo Sanchez said he did not expect them to be detained for long.
“The prognosis is that they should be released today or maybe tomorrow because that’s the way they do things here,” said Sanchez. “In general, we’re talking about short detentions and arbitrary detentions but we are not talking about women who are doing anything violent.”
Several other dissidents were also arrested ahead of a papal visit next week. Two years ago the Vatican brokered the release of 130 political prisoners. The Ladies in White want all dissents to be set free.
