A Swiss couple who were kidnapped by the Pakistani Taliban last July are free after reportedly escaping. A Pakistani army spokesman said the pair showed up at a military checkpoint near the town of Miranshah in the northwest of the country and identified themselves.
Olivier David Och, and Daniela Widmer were seized in the southwestern province of Baluchistan and had been held by the Taliban in the North Waziristan region on the Afghan border.
It is not clear how the tourists managed to escape. The Swiss embassy in Pakistan has not confirmed that the pair are free. Kidnapping for ransom is relatively common in Pakistan, although foreigners are not often targets. Militants also occasionally take foreigners hostage.
