A female suicide bomber has killed at least five police officers at a traffic checkpoint in the Dagestan region of southern Russia, officials there said on Wednesday.
The woman blew herself up late on Tuesday night in the village of Karabudakent, some 40 kilometres from the provincial capital of Makhachkala.
A website used by Islamist insurgents from the region claimed that the explosion killed as many as ten policemen, branding them as ‘puppet terrorists’.
Bomb attacks and shootings are common in Dagestan.
