Italy has summoned the Indian ambassador to Rome to protest about the jailing of two Italian marines suspected of shooting dead two fishermen.
They had been assigned to protect an Italian merchant vessel sailing off the Indian coast.
On February 15th, the marines opened fire on a fishing trawler, killing the two men.
Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone said they mistook them for Somali pirates.
The pair will appear in court again on Friday.
Italian diplomats argue India has no jurisdiction over the case they were sailing in international waters.
The country’s foreign ministry has stated that the two marines could be tried at home, but India has rejected that offer.
